Stem Plants
Stem plants are the fast-growing backbone of the mid- and background — sold as rooted bunches, they’re the quickest way to add height, colour and density to a new tank. Our range includes feathery Cabomba Caroliniana and Red Myrio (Myriophyllum tuberculatum), broad-leaved Water Wisteria, and finer-leaved Bacopa Caroliniana, Ludwigia Repens, Rotala Rotundifolia and Rotala Wallichii. Choose based on light and colour: Rotala Wallichii and Ludwigia Repens reward stronger light with red-to-pink colouration, while Water Wisteria, Bacopa and Cabomba are more forgiving and stay lush green under moderate light. Mixing fine-leaved and broad-leaved stems side by side gives the most natural-looking background. All stem plants here are rooted in substrate rather than attached to hardscape, and they grow quickly enough that regular maintenance is part of the deal — trim the tops before they reach the surface and replant the cuttings to keep the bunch thick from the base up. They benefit from a liquid fertiliser (see our Fertilizer range) and respond well to CO2, though the greener species will still grow, just more slowly, without it. Buying tip: expect some lower leaves to melt or drop in the first week or two after planting as the bunch adjusts — trim those off and the new growth from the top will fill back in.
