Frequently Asked Questions
Is Egeria densa (Anacharis) good for an aquarium?
Yes. Egeria densa, also sold as Anacharis, is one of the easiest background plants for a beginner tank. It needs medium to high light but no CO₂, and grows planted or floating. It suits goldfish, guppy, shrimp and snail tanks. It does best at 18–26°C and can thin out if the water stays above about 28°C for weeks in summer.
Is it suitable for a goldfish or unheated tank?
Yes — Egeria Densa is one of the best plants for cooler, unheated aquariums and is commonly used in goldfish tanks. Goldfish often nibble the soft tips, so start with a few extra stems.
Do I need to plant it in substrate?
It roots easily in substrate but also grows fine left loose or floating, making it very forgiving.
Does it help with algae?
Its fast growth makes it a strong nutrient competitor, which can help starve out algae over time.
Is Anacharis a fast growing plant?
Yes, very fast. In good light a healthy stem can add several centimetres a week, and it soon reaches the surface in most tanks. Trim the tops every week or two and replant the cuttings to keep it bushy. In low light it slows down and gets leggy. Never throw trimmings into drains, ponds or lakes, as it spreads easily.
Does Anacharis clean water?
Yes, to a point. As it grows, Anacharis takes up ammonia, nitrate and phosphate from the water, and it adds oxygen while the lights are on. That leaves less food for algae. It does not remove solid waste or debris, so keep your filter and weekly water changes. See which aquarium plants lower ammonia and nitrate.
