Carpeting plants are the low, spreading species that cover the front of a tank in a green lawn. They are the most demanding group we sell, because a carpet only forms when light reaches the substrate and the plant can spread faster than algae can settle on it. Choose the species to match the tank you actually have, not the photo you like. Which carpet suits which tank Without CO2 and with a modest light: Dwarf sagittaria and Hydrocotyle tripartita are the realistic choices. They grow taller and looser than a show carpet, but they spread reliably. With good light, no CO2: Staurogyne repens works as a low bush rather than a true lawn, and Marsilea hirsuta will creep slowly. With CO2 and a strong light: Monte Carlo and dwarf hairgrass give the classic dense carpet. Monte Carlo is the more forgiving of the two. Plant in small portions, two to three centimetres apart, pushing the roots into the substrate and leaving the crown just above it. Trim early and often: the first trim is what makes the plants branch sideways instead of upwards. A nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs helps more here than with any other group, because carpets feed mostly through their roots. In Indian summers, carpets are the first plants to suffer when the tank crosses 30 °C, so keep a fan or a lid gap in April and May and avoid running the light longer to “push” growth. Six to eight hours of bright light beats ten hours of weak light every time. Helpful reading: the easiest carpet plant without CO2, Monte Carlo compared with dwarf hairgrass and foreground plant options.
