Aquarium ferns are rhizome plants — Java fern and its narrow-leaf, needle-leaf and trident forms, plus Bolbitis — that attach to wood and stone instead of rooting in substrate. They are the classic low-tech choice alongside Anubias: no CO2, low light, tough leathery leaves that fish and even goldfish usually leave alone. Fern basics that decide success Never bury the rhizome. Tie or glue the green stem to hardscape and let the dark roots grip on their own. Six to eight hours of gentle light. Ferns burn and collect algae under strong light much faster than they grow. Black spots and brown patches on older leaves are usually normal reproduction or a nutrient gap, not rot. If the rhizome is firm, the plant is fine. Plantlets: mature Java fern leaves grow baby plants at their tips. Once a plantlet has three or four leaves and its own roots, snap it off and attach it elsewhere — that is how one plant becomes a wall of ferns for free. Warm water: Java fern copes with Indian summers better than most species, though flow and a slightly lower light help above 30 °C. Ferns pair naturally with mosses and Anubias on the same piece of driftwood, which is the simplest low-tech layout there is: hardscape in the middle, epiphytes attached, stems at the back.
