Frequently Asked Questions

Will floating plants block too much light from my other plants? If they cover the whole surface, yes. Thin them regularly, or keep them to one area with a floating ring, so light still reaches the plants below.
How do I stop floating plants from taking over the tank?Once they're established, net out the extra every week. Frogbit, Water Lettuce and Pennywort are easy to thin by hand. Duckweed spreads fastest, so remove it more often if you don't want full surface coverage.
Are all the plants in this category free-floating?No. Duckweed, Amazon Frogbit, Water Lettuce and Water Hyacinth float freely with their roots hanging in the water. Red Water Lily and Water Mosaic (Ludwigia sedioides) root in the substrate and send their leaves up to the surface on long stems. Brazilian Pennywort can be left floating or planted in the substrate.
