Description
Brazilian Pennywort is prized for its versatility: round, scalloped leaves on trailing stems that will grow happily planted in substrate, left to float on the surface, or grown emersed above the waterline. It’s fast, forgiving, and a great nutrient export plant for tanks prone to algae. A genuinely easy option for beginners who want lush growth without fussing over CO2 or dosing schedules.
What you get: one bunch of about 5–7 stems, similar to the photo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Brazilian Pennywort a good aquarium plant?
Yes, it is one of the easiest plants for beginners. It grows in low to high light at 20–28 °C, needs no CO2, and is not fussy about pH or hardness. The round 2–5 cm leaves are safe with fish and shrimp, though goldfish may nibble them. Its only real demand is regular trimming so it does not shade slower plants.
Is Brazilian Pennywort fast-growing?
Yes. In good light, stems can grow several centimetres a week and quickly reach the surface, where they trail across and keep growing. Floating stems usually grow fastest because they get the most light and can take CO2 from the air. In low light it still grows, just more slowly, with smaller leaves spaced further apart. Plan to trim it about once a week and replant or float the cut tops.
What is a Pennywort plant good for?
It helps keep algae in check. Its fast growth soaks up ammonia, nitrate and phosphate that would otherwise feed algae. Left floating, it forms a shady canopy and its hanging roots give cover to fry and shrimp. Thin it out so plants below still get light. It also fills a bare background quickly and can grow above water in paludariums and ponds. Compare it with other plants that reduce ammonia and nitrate.
