Frequently Asked Questions

Can isopods live in my fully submerged fish tank? No. Isopods are land animals that breathe air and need humidity and damp, not waterlogged, substrate. They belong in a terrarium, a bioactive enclosure or the land side of a paludarium, not inside a fully underwater planted tank.
What do isopods actually eat?Decaying plant matter, leaf litter, mould, biofilm and leftover food, which is what makes them a useful clean-up crew in a bioactive setup. Add a calcium source such as cuttlebone or crushed eggshell for their shells.
Do isopods harm live plants?Generally no. They mainly feed on decaying organic matter rather than healthy plant tissue, so they are safe alongside Anubias, Bucephalandra and other hardscape plants in a paludarium. Keeping leaf litter and food available gives them no reason to nibble soft new growth.
What setup do isopods need?Humidity, a substrate like leaf litter or cocoa fibre with one damp area and one drier area, hiding places such as bark or cork, and stable warm temperatures.
How many isopods should I start with? There is no fixed number. Start with a small colony sized to your enclosure: in good conditions, with humidity, leaf litter, food and a calcium source, isopods breed on their own and the colony grows over time.
