The classic grassy carpet. Planted in small clumps, it sends out runners that knit into a lush green lawn over time.
What you get: one rooted clump about the size shown in the photo, roughly 5 cm across at the base with about 6–10 small plantlets you can split for planting.

Will Dwarf Hairgrass carpet without CO₂?
Dwarf Hairgrass will slowly fill in without CO₂, but brighter light and CO₂ give a tighter, faster carpet.
How do I plant it?
Separate into small clumps and plant them a few centimetres apart in the foreground; they spread to join up.
How long until it fills in?
Usually one to two months with good light, CO₂ and fertiliser. Without CO₂ it spreads more slowly and can take several months.
Is Dwarf Hairgrass hard to grow?
No, it is easy to keep alive but takes some effort to grow into a dense carpet. It needs medium to high light and regular trimming to stay 3–8 cm tall, and it grows best in a fine, nutrient-rich substrate. In low light it grows tall and sparse instead of spreading. How does Dwarf Hairgrass reproduce?
Dwarf Hairgrass reproduces by runners. Each clump sends thin runners just under the substrate surface, and these root and put up new blades a short distance from the parent, so clumps slowly join into a carpet. It rarely flowers underwater, so you propagate it by splitting clumps or cutting rooted runners. To make it spread faster, see our dry start method guide.
Can Dwarf Hairgrass survive in sand?
Yes, Dwarf Hairgrass can grow in sand, but it spreads slower and forms a thinner carpet than in aquasoil, because plain sand holds almost no nutrients. Plant small clumps in a fine sand bed at least 4–5 cm deep and push root tabs near them every 1–2 months. Liquid fertiliser helps too. Our substrate guide compares sand, gravel and aquasoil.
