Description
Rotala Wallichii is considered one of the most beautiful red stem plants available, with delicate, needle-fine leaves that flush deep pink to red under strong light with regular iron and micronutrient dosing. It’s more demanding than Rotala rotundifolia — it wants high light and steady pressurised CO2 to really colour up. Its fine texture and colour make it a favourite background stem in competition-style aquascapes. Plant in bunches; trim and replant tops regularly to maintain dense, colourful growth.
What you get: one bunch of about 12–15 stems, similar to the photo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rotala wallichii hard to grow?
Yes, it is one of the more demanding stem plants. It needs strong light for 8–10 hours, pressurised CO2, regular iron and micronutrient dosing, and soft, slightly acidic water. Keep it at 22–28 °C and plant it in the background. In a well-run high-tech tank it grows moderately fast and turns pink-red. With weak light or no CO2 it stays thin and green.
Will Rotala wallichii grow without CO2?
Not well. Without CO2 it can survive for a while, but stems usually turn thin, leggy and pale green, and lower leaves often drop. Liquid carbon helps a little but is not a real substitute. For dense, pink-red growth, run pressurised CO2 at about 25–30 ppm with strong light. For a no-CO2 tank, choose Rotala rotundifolia instead.
Is Rotala a beginner plant?
It depends on the species. Rotala rotundifolia is a good beginner plant: it grows fast and survives in low-tech tanks without CO2, just with less colour. Rotala wallichii is not a beginner plant, because it needs strong light, pressurised CO2 and steady fertiliser dosing. If this is your first planted tank, start with rotundifolia. Our Rotala wallichii vs Rotala rotundifolia guide compares both side by side.
