Description
Cabomba caroliniana is a classic fine-leaved stem plant, prized for its soft, feathery texture that contrasts beautifully against broad-leaved plants like Anubias and Amazon Swords. It’s a fast grower under moderate-to-high light, making it a good nutrient sink for tanks prone to algae. Plant stems in small bunches; trim and replant tops as it reaches the surface to keep it bushy.
What you get: one bunch of about 8–10 stems, similar to the photo.

Care at a glance
- Placement: Background
- Light: Medium to high
- CO₂: Recommended
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Growth: Fast
- Difficulty: Medium
Cabomba needs good light to keep its fine, fan-shaped leaves; in low light it sheds lower leaves. Read the full Cabomba care guide for planting, trimming and troubleshooting tips.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Cabomba grow without CO2?
Yes, but it grows slower and thinner. Without injected CO₂, Cabomba survives if it gets medium to high light for 7–8 hours a day, plus root tabs and a liquid fertiliser. Expect wider gaps between leaf whorls and some lower-leaf loss. Cabomba is often sensitive to liquid carbon, so start at half dose or skip it.
What are Cabomba’s common problems?
The most common problem is leaf shedding. A few loose leaves after transit are normal, and fresh growth appears at the tips within one to two weeks. Shedding that continues usually means weak light, unstable CO₂ or low nutrients. Bare lower stems do not regrow leaves, so replant the healthy tops. Cabomba also struggles above about 28°C in Indian summers and in very hard borewell water, and goldfish eat its soft leaves. Trim with scissors, as the stems snap easily.
Which is better, Cabomba or ambulia?
For most beginners, ambulia (Limnophila sessiliflora) is the easier choice. It grows just as fast, copes with lower light and no CO₂, and is more forgiving overall. Cabomba has softer, fan-shaped leaves and a finer look, but it needs medium to high light and stable water to stop shedding. Pick Cabomba for looks in a bright tank, or ambulia for an easy low-tech background.
