Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rotala Rotundifolia easy to grow?
Yes. Rotala Rotundifolia is one of the easiest stem plants for beginners. It grows at 22–28°C without CO₂ and does best in medium to high light. The main work is trimming, because it grows fast. Brighter light and a liquid fertiliser with iron bring out the best growth and pink tips.
Does Rotala Rotundifolia need CO₂?
No. Rotala Rotundifolia grows well in low-tech tanks without CO₂. Without it, growth is slower and the tips are usually less pink. Adding CO₂ with stronger light speeds growth, gives denser stems and deepens the pink-to-orange colour. In a tank without CO₂, dose a liquid fertiliser with iron and avoid very strong light, which can bring algae.
How do I plant it?
Plant the stems in substrate a few centimetres apart; trim and replant the cut tops to build a fuller group.
How do I care for a green Rotala Rotundifolia plant?
Give it medium to high light, 22–28°C water, a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs and a weekly liquid fertiliser with iron. Green leaves are normal in moderate light. For pink tips, give it stronger light and avoid very high nitrate. It is safe with shrimp and most community fish, though goldfish may eat or uproot it. Read more on red aquarium plants.
How tall can Rotala Rotundifolia grow?
Rotala Rotundifolia has no fixed height. The stems grow up to the water surface and then bend and trail along it, so untrimmed stems fill your tank’s full water depth and can pass 30 cm long. With bright light and CO₂ they can add several centimetres a week. Grow it in the midground or background, and when stems near the top, cut the upper 8–10 cm and replant them.
