Description
Java moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) is the most popular and forgiving aquarium moss. It attaches to almost any surface, thrives in low light without CO₂, and is a favourite in shrimp tanks as both shelter and grazing surface.
What you get: one loose portion of Java moss roughly 5×5 cm (a small handful), similar to the photo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Java moss easy to grow?
Yes — Java moss is the easiest aquarium moss, growing in almost any freshwater tank in low light with no CO₂.
Is Java moss hard to keep alive?
No. Java moss is one of the hardest aquarium plants to kill. It survives low light, no CO₂ and water from 20–30°C. Most losses come from long spells above 30°C in Indian summers, thick clumps that trap dirt and rot from inside, or goldfish and big cichlids tearing it apart. Keep the layer thin, trim every 2–4 weeks and rinse out debris.
Does Java moss spread quickly?
Java moss spreads steadily but not quickly. In a low-light tank without CO₂, a thin layer tied to wood usually grips within 2–4 weeks and often takes two to three months or more to form a full mat. Brighter light, CO₂ and fertiliser speed it up. Loose bits drift and attach elsewhere, so trim and siphon out clippings. Our guide shows how to attach moss to rock and wood.
How do I use Java moss?
Tie or glue a thin layer to wood or rock and trim to shape; it attaches and spreads on its own.
What is Java moss good for?
Java moss is good for covering wood and rock, sheltering shrimp and fry, and catching eggs from spawning fish. Tied onto hardscape, it grows into a green mat that looks natural. Shrimp graze biofilm on it and hide in it while moulting. Many keepers also use it for moss walls, moss trees and as a spawning mop for tetras and barbs. See our shrimp-safe planted tank guide.
Is Java moss good for shrimp?
It is a shrimp-tank favourite — it shelters shrimplets and fry and provides a grazing surface.
Does it need CO₂?
No CO₂ required.
How is it shipped across India?
We pack it by hand and send it by courier anywhere in India for a flat ₹99, free on orders of ₹999 or more. Java moss is a pre-order item, so it ships about 15 days after you order. If it arrives dead, send one continuous unboxing video within 4 hours of delivery on WhatsApp (+91 81416 96983) or email (buyanubias@gmail.com) and we refund or replace it. Photos alone are not accepted.
How do I stick Java moss to wood or rock?
Spread a thin layer of moss over the surface and tie it down with cotton thread or fishing line, or fix small tufts with a dab of gel superglue on dry wood. Keep the layer thin so the moss underneath gets light. In a few weeks it grips the surface by itself. Step-by-step: how to attach moss to rock and wood.
Can Java moss grow in low light?
Yes. Java moss is one of the most low-light-tolerant aquarium plants and grows without CO₂. In dim tanks it grows slower and looser, with darker green strands. With brighter light it grows denser and faster, but needs more regular trimming and is more likely to trap algae, so keep the light moderate.
