How is Flame Moss different from Java Moss?
The main difference is shape. Flame Moss grows upright in twisting, flame-like tufts, while Java Moss spreads sideways in loose, messy clumps that cover a surface. Flame Moss also grows noticeably slower, so it needs less trimming. Care is almost the same: low to medium light, no CO₂ required, tied or glued onto wood or rock. Choose Flame for vertical accents and Java for carpets and walls.
Is Flame Moss fast growing?
No. Flame Moss is a slow grower, noticeably slower than Java Moss. A small portion usually takes two to three months to thicken into a full tuft, and the upright tufts rarely grow taller than about 10 cm. Medium light, CO₂ and a light liquid fertiliser speed it up a little. The upside is less trimming and a shape that stays tidy for longer.
How do I grow Flame Moss?
Tie or glue thin portions onto wood or rock. Give it low to medium light and gentle water flow. CO₂ is optional but gives denser, greener tufts. Keep the water at 18–28°C, ideally 22–26°C, because moss browns in very warm tanks. Dose a light liquid fertiliser, trim stray strands and rinse out trapped debris. How do I attach it?
Tie small portions to driftwood or rock with cotton thread or fine fishing line; it will anchor itself within a few weeks.
Does it need trimming?
Yes, but only now and then. Trim stray strands to keep the flame shape neat. Thin out very dense clumps so the lower parts still get light and flow and do not turn brown.
