Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my crypt’s leaves melt after planting?
“Crypt melt” after a move or big water change is common and usually temporary — leave the roots in place and fresh leaves will regrow within a few weeks.
Will it stay red in low light?
It holds colour better under medium light; in low light it leans more bronze-green, but it still grows and spreads reliably either way.
Does it need CO₂?
No — like other Cryptocoryne wendtii, it’s an easy, low-tech-friendly plant that thrives without CO₂ injection.
How big does Cryptocoryne wendtii Red get?
It usually stays 10–15 cm tall under medium light and reaches about 20 cm in low light, where the leaves stretch upward. Each rosette spreads about 8–15 cm across. Over several months, runners turn one plant into a hand-sized clump, so it suits the midground of most tanks and the foreground of larger ones.
How do I care for Cryptocoryne wendtii Red?
Give it low to medium light, 22–28°C and a nutrient-rich substrate; CO₂ is not needed. It feeds mainly through its roots, so push a root tab near it every two to three months (see our root tabs vs liquid fertiliser guide). Keep the crown at substrate level, then leave it alone, as moving it can trigger melt. It is safe with shrimp and peaceful community fish.
Is Cryptocoryne wendtii fast growing?
No, it is a slow grower. After planting it often melts, then takes three to six weeks to settle and push new leaves. Once rooted, expect a few new leaves a month, a little faster with medium light and root tabs. The upside is low upkeep: it rarely needs trimming, only the odd old leaf removed.
Does Cryptocoryne wendtii spread?
Yes, slowly. Once settled, it sends runners under the substrate that come up as new plantlets a few centimetres from the parent. Over several months one plant becomes a dense clump. When a plantlet has its own roots and four or five leaves, you can cut the runner and replant it elsewhere. Our guide on how to propagate aquarium plants covers this step by step.
