Frequently Asked Questions
What is Anubias Nana Pinto?
Anubias Nana Pinto (Anubias barteri var. nana ‘Pinto’) is a variegated form of Anubias Nana. Its small, dark green leaves, about 3–5 cm long, are marbled with white, and some come out almost fully white. The plant stays compact, usually 5–15 cm tall, and grows very slowly, even by Anubias standards.
Is Anubias Pinto easy to grow?
Yes. Like any Anubias, it is hardy, needs no CO₂ and does well in low to moderate light, so beginners can keep it. It grows even more slowly than green Anubias, though, so it is slow to recover if a leaf gets damaged. Handle it gently and keep the light gentle.
Does Anubias Pinto need CO₂?
No. Anubias Pinto grows well with no CO₂ and only low to moderate light. Added CO₂ can speed up growth a little, but keep the light gentle so algae does not settle on its slow-growing leaves.
How do I plant Anubias Pinto?
Never bury the rhizome. Attach Anubias Pinto to driftwood or rock with cotton thread or aquarium-safe super-glue gel, leaving the rhizome exposed — its roots grip the surface within a few weeks.
Is Anubias Pinto safe for all fish and shrimp?
Yes. Anubias is safe for fish, shrimp and snails, and it releases nothing harmful into the water. Most fish, even goldfish and cichlids, leave its tough leaves alone. Big diggers such as oscars or flowerhorns can uproot it, so tie it firmly to wood or rock. Give it a gentle rinse before adding it to your tank. Its leaves contain calcium oxalate, so keep trimmings away from cats, dogs and children. More in our Anubias safety guide.
Why is Anubias Pinto so expensive?
Because Anubias grows very slowly, and Pinto is slower still. A normal Anubias adds only about one new leaf every two to three weeks, so a sellable plant takes many months to grow. The white parts of Pinto’s leaves have little chlorophyll to make energy, so it grows even slower. Demand for variegated Anubias is also high. Even so, Pinto is one of the most affordable variegated Anubias; rarer types such as Stardust and Panda cost over ₹1,000. See our Anubias growth rate guide.
Which Anubias is best?
For most tanks, Anubias Nana is the best all-rounder: tough, affordable and easy to place in the midground. Nana Petite suits nano tanks and small gaps in hardscape. Barteri var. Glabra gives more height for the background. Pick Pinto if you want a white-and-green accent and can keep the light gentle. Compare every variety in our Anubias plant types guide.
