Description

Philippine Java Fern is a robust variety of Microsorum pteropus with broader, longer leaves marked by prominent veining. It makes a bold midground or background statement and, like all Java ferns, is extremely hardy — thriving in low light without CO₂ and attaching to driftwood and rock.

Java Fern Philippine is a Java fern (Microsorum pteropus), not an Anubias; if you are choosing between the two, see Java fern vs Anubias.

What you get: one clump of Java Fern Philippine in a small grow plug, about the size in the photo (roughly 12–20 leaves).

Care at a glance

  • Light: low to moderate
  • CO₂: not required
  • Temperature: 20–28°C
  • Placement: attach the rhizome to wood or rock — never bury it
  • Difficulty: very easy

Grown in Surat, hand-picked and shipped across India. See our Java fern care guide or browse all ferns & mosses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Java Fern Philippine an Anubias?

No. Java Fern Philippine is a variety of Java fern (Microsorum pteropus), a different plant from Anubias. Anubias has thick, glossy, dark leaves and grows even slower, while this fern has broad, prominently veined leaves and spreads through plantlets on its leaves. Care is almost identical: low light, no CO₂, and the rhizome tied to wood or rock, never buried. Compare them in our Java fern vs Anubias guide.

Is Java Fern Philippine easy to grow?

Yes. Java fern is one of the hardiest aquarium plants and grows well in low light without CO₂. It is hard to kill as long as the rhizome is not buried, so it suits beginners and betta tanks. It grows slowly, so it needs little trimming.

Does it need CO₂?

No CO₂ is needed — low to moderate light is plenty.

How do I plant it?

Never bury the rhizome. Attach it to driftwood or rock with thread or aquarium-safe glue, leaving the rhizome exposed; the roots grip on their own.

Is it safe for shrimp and fish?

Yes. It is safe for fish and shrimp. The leaves are tough but smooth-edged, so they will not tear betta fins, and shrimp pick food off the leaf surface. Most fish leave the leaves alone.

How is it shipped across India?

It is hand-packed and sent by courier anywhere in India for a flat ₹99, free on orders of ₹999 or more. If it arrives dead, send one continuous unboxing video within 4 hours of delivery on WhatsApp (+91 81416 96983) or email (buyanubias@gmail.com) and we refund or replace it. Photos alone are not accepted.

How much does a Java Fern plant cost?

Java Fern Philippine costs ₹175 for one clump in a grow plug, like the one in the photo, and our standard, Wrinkled Leaf and Dwarf Java ferns are also ₹175 each. Shipping is ₹99 flat anywhere in India and free on orders from ₹999. Payment is prepaid by UPI, card or netbanking. One plant also multiplies over time, because Java fern grows small plantlets on its leaves that you can detach and replant.

Is Java Fern ok in cold water?

Java fern is not a true cold-water plant. It does best at 20–28°C and can handle short dips to about 18°C, where it simply grows more slowly. Weeks of colder water stress it, and the leaves can turn brown or black. It suits goldfish tanks at 20–24°C, as goldfish rarely eat its tough leaves. For North Indian winters, see our winter heater guide.

Not sure which variety suits your tank? Our Java fern types guide compares all eight.
