Will Staurogyne Repens carpet without CO₂?
Staurogyne Repens will slowly fill in without CO₂, but brighter light and CO₂ give a tighter, faster carpet.
How do I plant it?
Separate it into single stems or small groups of 2–3 stems and plant them 2–3 cm deep and 2–3 cm apart in the foreground. Trim and replant the tops as it grows, and the gaps close up.
How long until it fills in?
Usually a few months. Trimming and replanting the tops every 3–4 weeks thickens it faster, and brighter light, CO₂ and root tabs speed it up. Without CO₂ it is slower.
How do I care for Staurogyne Repens?
Give it medium to bright light, a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs, and water at 20–28°C. CO₂ is optional but speeds up growth. Add a complete liquid fertiliser once a week. When stems reach 8–10 cm, trim the top 3–4 cm and replant the cuttings to keep it low and bushy. It suits shrimp and community tanks, but goldfish and digging fish uproot it.
What are common problems with Staurogyne Repens?
The usual problems are yellow lower leaves, pinholes, leggy growth and slow spreading. Yellow lower leaves usually mean the substrate is short of nutrients, so add root tabs. Pinholes point to low potassium; dose a complete liquid fertiliser. Tall, stretched stems mean the light is too weak. It spreads faster when you trim and replant the tops. What is the common name for Staurogyne Repens?
Staurogyne Repens has no widely used English common name. Most shops and hobbyists just call it Staurogyne Repens, “S. repens” or “Stauro”. It is a small creeping stem plant from Brazil, in the acanthus family (Acanthaceae). In the tank it usually grows 5–10 cm tall, and regular trimming turns it into a low, bushy carpet in the foreground.
