Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bacopa Caroliniana easy to grow?
Bacopa Caroliniana is a forgiving, slow-growing stem plant suited to beginners. Brighter light and a little fertiliser bring out the best growth and colour.
Does it need CO₂?
No – it grows without CO₂, though CO₂ and stronger light speed it up.
How do I plant it?
Plant the stems in substrate a few centimetres apart; trim and replant the cut tops to build a fuller group.
Is Bacopa good for an aquarium?
Yes. Bacopa caroliniana is one of the easier stem plants for a planted tank. It grows in low-tech and CO₂ tanks, stays upright and tidy, and uses up nitrate as it grows. It is safe with shrimp, snails and community fish, though goldfish may nibble it. See more plants that reduce ammonia and nitrate.
What are the differences between Bacopa caroliniana and Bacopa monnieri?
Leaf size and scent are the easiest tells. Bacopa caroliniana has larger, broader oval leaves that smell of lemon when crushed, blue flowers above water, and top leaves that turn copper under bright light. Bacopa monnieri, the Brahmi herb that grows wild in India, has smaller, narrower, spoon-shaped leaves, no lemon smell and small white or pale lilac flowers. Monnieri usually grows a little faster.
How fast does Bacopa grow in an aquarium?
Slowly to moderately. Bacopa caroliniana is one of the slower stem plants. In a low-tech tank with a basic LED it grows steadily, and you may only need to trim every few weeks. With stronger light, CO₂ and regular fertiliser it grows noticeably faster and the tops turn copper. For cutting and replanting tips, see how to trim aquarium plants.
What is Bacopa caroliniana used for?
It is used as a background or midground stem plant in aquariums. Planted in a group, it forms a tidy green-to-copper wall behind shorter plants such as Anubias. It also grows out of water in paludariums and pond edges. It is not the Brahmi herb used in Ayurveda, and we sell it as a live plant only, not for eating. More options: background aquarium plants.
