Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Green’ is one of the hardiest rooted aquarium plants, forming lush rosettes of wavy green leaves ideal for the midground. Plant it in substrate and be patient through the normal early ‘crypt melt’ — vigorous new growth follows.

How do I plant Cryptocoryne?
Plant the crown in your substrate, keeping the base of the leaves above the soil. Root tabs help it flourish.
Why is my Cryptocoryne melting?
Some or all of the leaves may soften and dissolve in the first two to three weeks after planting. This is normal crypt melt, and the roots are usually still alive. Leave the roots in place, and new leaves usually appear from the centre within three to five weeks.
Does it need CO₂?
No CO₂ is needed; low to moderate light is ideal.
How big does Cryptocoryne wendtii get?
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Green’ usually grows 10–20 cm tall in a home aquarium, and each rosette is about 8–15 cm across. In low light or a deep tank the leaves stretch longer, sometimes to 30 cm, while brighter light keeps the rosette shorter and more compact. Growth is slow to moderate, so it rarely needs trimming. Does Cryptocoryne wendtii spread?
Yes, it spreads slowly by runners under the substrate. New plantlets appear a few centimetres from the mother plant, and over several months they fill in to form a dense clump. Does Cryptocoryne wendtii need substrate?
Yes, it grows best planted in substrate. It is a rooted plant that takes much of its food through its roots. Unlike Anubias or Java fern, it is not a good plant to tie to wood or rock. Plant it in sand, fine gravel or aqua soil at least 5 cm deep. In plain sand or gravel, push a root tab near the roots every 2–3 months (see root tabs vs liquid fertiliser).
