Description

Dwarf Java Fern (‘Green Gnome’ / ‘Mini’) is the compact, bushy form of Java fern (Microsorum pteropus) that stays small: usually under about 15 cm tall, against 15–30 cm for the classic plant. That keeps scale right in nano tanks under 40 litres, and it fits the foreground or midground on small stones and wood. Each clump is several rhizomes growing close together, so it looks dense rather than tall. It is as hardy as standard Java fern: low light is enough and no CO₂ is needed.

What you get: one clump of several rhizomes with roughly 50–70 leaves, similar to the photo.

Care at a glance

  • Light: low to moderate
  • CO₂: not required
  • Temperature: 20–28°C
  • Placement: attach the rhizome to wood or rock — never bury it
  • Difficulty: very easy

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Microsorum pteropus ‘Green Gnome’?

It is a dwarf, bushy form of Java fern (Microsorum pteropus, now also listed as Leptochilus pteropus). It is the same species as the classic plant but stays compact, usually under about 15 cm tall, compared with 15–30 cm for standard Java fern. Growth is slow. Care is identical: low to moderate light, no CO₂, and the rhizome tied to wood or rock, never buried.

Is Dwarf Java Fern easy to grow?

Yes — Java fern is one of the hardiest aquarium plants, thriving in low light without CO₂. It is very hard to kill as long as the rhizome is not buried, so it suits beginners and betta tanks.

Does it need CO₂?

No CO₂ is needed — low to moderate light is plenty.

How do I plant it?

Never bury the rhizome. Attach it to driftwood or rock with thread or aquarium-safe glue, leaving the rhizome exposed; the roots grip on their own.

Is it safe for shrimp and fish?

Yes. Its leaves have no sharp edges, so they will not tear a betta’s fins. Shrimp graze the biofilm on them, and most fish leave Java fern uneaten.

Why can’t I keep Java fern alive?

Usually because the rhizome is buried. Pushed into gravel or soil, it rots and the leaves melt, so tie it to wood or rock instead. Other causes are very strong light or direct sunlight, no fertiliser in a tank with few fish, and water above 30°C in Indian summers. A few leaves may also melt after delivery; new ones grow as long as the rhizome stays firm.

Why is Java fern turning brown?

Usually because of spores, low nutrients or a buried rhizome. Neat rows of brown dots under the leaves are harmless spores. Brown, see-through patches that spread mean low nutrients, often potassium, so dose a complete liquid fertiliser weekly. Leaves browning from the base point to a buried or rotting rhizome. Very strong light can also scorch leaves. Trim badly damaged leaves. See our Java fern brown leaves guide.

Which is better, Anubias or Java fern?

Neither is better; care is almost identical. Both are low-light plants that need no CO₂ and grow tied to wood or rock. Anubias has thick, glossy, dark leaves and grows even slower. Java fern has lighter green, textured leaves and spreads faster through plantlets. In a nano tank, Dwarf Java Fern and Anubias Nana look good together. Compare them in our Java fern vs Anubias guide.
