Description

Anubias Barteri var. glabra (often searched simply as Anubias glabra) is a larger Anubias with longer, smooth lance-shaped leaves for the midground and background, grown in Surat and graded by leaf count from S to XL. It usually grows 15–30 cm tall, with leaf blades about 8–15 cm long on slender stems, so it suits tanks of about 60 cm (2 feet) and larger. It keeps all the Anubias toughness: low to moderate light, no CO₂, and a rhizome that attaches to driftwood or rock.

Anubias Barteri var. glabra care at a glance

  • Size: usually 15–30 cm tall, leaf blades 8–15 cm
  • Light: low to moderate
  • CO₂: not required
  • Temperature: 22–28°C
  • Placement: attach the rhizome to driftwood or rock — never bury it
  • Difficulty: easy, great for beginners

Glabra is sold in four leaf-count grades, from an S starter cutting (up to 5 leaves) to an XL mother plant (20+ leaves); the size guide explains what each grade includes. For a much smaller plant, Anubias Nana stays about 5–10 cm tall, and Anubias Nana vs Barteri compares the two side by side. New to Anubias? Read our Anubias care guide or browse all Anubias.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Anubias Barteri var glabra easy to grow?

Yes. Barteri var. glabra needs the same easy care as other Anubias: low to moderate light, no CO₂ and water at 22–28°C. Because it grows larger than Nana, give it room in the midground or background, keep the rhizome above the substrate, and keep strong light off its leaves to avoid algae.

Does Anubias Barteri var glabra need CO₂?

No. Anubias Barteri var glabra grows well with no CO₂ and only low to moderate light. Added CO₂ and brighter light can speed up growth a little, but strong light often causes algae on its slow-growing leaves.

How do I plant Anubias Barteri var glabra?

Tie it to driftwood or a rock with cotton thread, or fix it with a dot of aquarium-safe super-glue gel, and keep the rhizome uncovered. Its long leaf stems suit the back of wood or rockwork, where the leaves fill the midground or background; the roots grip the surface within a few weeks.

Is Anubias Barteri var glabra safe for shrimp and fish?

Yes. Anubias Barteri var glabra is not harmful to shrimp or fish, and it suits shrimp tanks and community aquariums. Give it a gentle rinse before adding it to your tank.

How is Anubias Barteri var glabra shipped across India?

It is hand-packed and sent by courier anywhere in India for a flat ₹99, free on orders of ₹999 or more. If it arrives dead, send one continuous unboxing video within 4 hours of delivery on WhatsApp (+91 81416 96983) or email (buyanubias@gmail.com) and we refund or replace it. Photos alone are not accepted.

Is Anubias Barteri good for an aquarium?

Yes. Anubias Barteri is a very dependable plant for most freshwater aquariums. It grows in low to moderate light without CO₂, handles 22–28°C, and needs no rich substrate because it is tied to wood or rock. Its thick, tough leaves are usually left alone by goldfish and cichlids, and slow growth means little trimming. See plants goldfish and cichlids won’t destroy.

Why are Anubias so expensive?

Anubias cost more than most aquarium plants because they grow very slowly. A healthy plant often adds one leaf every one to three weeks, so a large mother plant takes many months to a year to grow. Growers multiply them mainly by cutting the rhizome, and each cut piece needs 3–4 leaves of its own, so new stock builds up slowly. See how Anubias propagation works. Our glabra is priced by leaf count, from ₹90 (S) to ₹250 (XL).

How big does Anubias Barteri grow?

In an aquarium, Anubias Barteri var. glabra usually grows 15–30 cm tall, with smooth, narrow leaf blades about 8–15 cm long on long stems. Young plants start smaller and take many months to reach full size. The rhizome creeps slowly sideways, so the plant gets wider over time rather than shooting up. It suits the midground or background of tanks about 60 cm (2 feet) and larger. Anubias Nana, by comparison, stays 5–10 cm tall. Read Anubias Nana vs Barteri.

What is the rarest Anubias?

There is no single official rarest Anubias, but among plants sold in India the variegated cultivars, with white, cream or speckled leaves, are among the hardest to find. Snow White, Marble, Panda and Stardust grow even slower than green Anubias, so supply is small and prices are several times higher. Barteri var. glabra is a common green type, which keeps it affordable. Compare them in our rare Anubias price guide.
