Cheap moss that costs you more later
Price alone is a poor guide, because the cheapest portion often carries the highest hidden cost. A few things to weigh before choosing on price.
- Pest snails and eggs. Moss is the easiest plant for snail eggs to hide in, and a bargain portion can seed a tank you then spend months managing.
- Algae already in the strands. Hair algae growing through moss cannot be picked out cleanly. You end up discarding most of the portion, so a cheap bunch becomes an expensive one.
- Dead inner material. A thick, tightly packed portion often has a brown core that will never recover, so you are paying for weight rather than living moss.
- Wild collected moss. Often cheap and often not the species named, since several mosses look alike out of water.
- Summer transit. A saving of a few rupees means nothing if the portion arrives cooked in May.

How much moss a project actually needs
