Best Aquarium Light for a Planted Tank in India: A Buyer’s Guide

Buying a light for a planted tank is where a lot of Indian hobbyists go wrong before they’ve even added water. Local pet shops mostly stock “fish tank lights” built to make fish colours pop for viewing, not to grow plants, and online listings lean hard on lumens and wattage numbers that don’t tell you whether a fixture will grow anything. Here’s what actually matters.

Why Lumens Don’t Matter (PAR and Spectrum, Explained Simply)

Lumens measure brightness the way the human eye perceives it, weighted toward the green-yellow wavelengths we’re most sensitive to. Plants don’t process light the way our eyes do, so a lumens figure on a box tells you almost nothing about growth potential.

What actually matters is PAR — Photosynthetically Active Radiation — the usable light energy in the 400-700nm range that drives photosynthesis, measured at the plant or substrate level in µmol/m²/s, often labelled PPFD on spec sheets. Higher PAR means more energy available for growth, but only if CO2 and nutrients are there to keep up; throw high PAR at a tank that can’t use it, and the excess just fuels algae instead.

Spectrum matters alongside intensity. Chlorophyll absorbs most strongly in the blue (roughly 430–450nm) and red (roughly 620–660nm) bands, and reflects most of the green, which is why plants look green in the first place. A light heavy in warm yellow-white with barely any blue or red peak looks pleasant to your eye and still underperforms for plant growth.

Kelvin and colour rendering

Kelvin, or colour temperature, is a rough proxy at best, not a real spec. Somewhere around 6500K to 8000K tends to give a balanced, daylight-like look with a reasonable spectrum for planted tanks. Very warm lights (3000–4000K) skew yellow-red and look murky underwater; very cool lights (above 10,000–12,000K) skew blue and suit reef tanks more than plant growth. Don’t shop by Kelvin number alone — a published spectral graph or PAR chart tells you far more.

How Much Light Does Your Tank Actually Need?

Low-tech, no-CO2 tanks

Aim for low-to-moderate PAR at the substrate — roughly 20 to 40 PPFD as a ballpark — run for 6 to 8 hours a day. This range suits genuinely low-light plants like Anubias, Java fern, Bucephalandra and Cryptocoryne, all of which photosynthesize fine without supplemented carbon. Pushing more intensity without CO2 doesn’t speed these plants up — they can’t use the extra energy, and algae will.

High-tech, CO2-injected tanks

With pressurized CO2 and proper fertilizing, a tank can support 40 to 100+ PPFD, because the plants now have the carbon to convert that light into fast growth. This is the bracket that Dutch-style stem carpets and carpeted Nature or Iwagumi layouts need to fill in properly. If you’re not running CO2, there’s rarely a good reason to buy a light built for this range — you’ll just be feeding algae.

Budget vs Premium Lighting Categories in India

Entry-level clip-on or bar LEDs sold generically for aquariums sit at the bottom of the market — usually a mix of white and blue LEDs chosen for visual appeal, often missing a meaningful red channel, with little to no adjustability. They’re fine over a low-light jar of Anubias or Java fern, but disappointing for anything you actually want to grow.

Mid-range planted-specific LED bars and panels sit above that: a spectrum blend genuinely aimed at photosynthesis, mixing red and blue diodes with white, often with a brightness dial or basic timer, sold through aquarium-focused importers rather than general electronics retailers. This bracket comfortably covers most low-tech tanks and moderate high-tech setups.

Premium programmable full-spectrum lights sit at the top: app or controller-based dimming, sunrise-sunset ramping, sometimes per-channel spectrum tuning. These suit competitive aquascapers and serious high-tech tanks, where fine control over PAR matters because you’re pushing growth hard and need precision, not guesswork. As a rough sense of scale, not a quote for any product: basic clip lights run under a thousand rupees, planted-tank bars generally sit in the low-to-mid thousands depending on length and output, and premium programmable units cost several times that. Treat any number online as a starting reference — size, features and import costs move these ranges a lot.

Common Mistakes Indian Hobbyists Make With Lighting

Buying for brightness over spread is a common one — a wider, evenly diffused light often grows plants better edge to edge than a narrow, intensely bright one that leaves the corners dim.

Running the light too long is another. “More hours means more growth” feels intuitive but isn’t how it works; it just extends the daily window algae has to establish. Six to eight hours is enough for most home tanks.

Skipping a timer causes more algae outbreaks than people realize. Manual on/off switching leads to an inconsistent photoperiod, a well-known algae trigger, and power cuts in India already do this randomly enough without help. A simple timer — ideally on the same backup power as anything else on your inverter or UPS — keeps the photoperiod steady even when mains power doesn’t cooperate.

Heat load matters more here than in cooler climates. Older T5, T8 or metal halide fixtures throw off real heat, stacking on already-warm Indian ambient temperatures and pushing tank water into stressful territory through summer, sometimes forcing an unnecessary chiller purchase. LEDs run far cooler, which is why they’re now the default choice for planted tanks here.

The biggest single cause of algae, though, is mismatching light to CO2 — buying a bright, high-output light because it looked impressive, running it over a low-tech Anubias-and-Crypto tank with no CO2, and fighting green spot or black beard algae for months without realizing the light is the cause.

  • Match PAR and spectrum to whether you’re running CO2, not to lumens or sticker price
  • Confirm the fixture spans the tank’s full length — dark corners under-light marginal plants
  • Add a timer, and keep it on backup power if outages are frequent where you live
  • Prefer LED over T5/metal halide for heat and running-cost reasons in India’s climate
  • When unsure, undershoot rather than overshoot — it’s easier to add a second fixture later than fix a too-much-light, no-CO2 algae outbreak

Matching the Light to the Plants You Actually Keep

If your tank is built around Anubias, Java fern, Bucephalandra and Cryptocoryne, you don’t need a premium high-PAR fixture at all — a modest, well-spread planted-specific light on a timer will outperform an expensive light that’s mismatched to a low-tech setup. Save the premium lighting budget for the day you add CO2 and start growing carpets or stem plants that can actually use it.
