Aquarium Plants Turning Yellow? Causes & Fixes

Yellow leaves are the most common planted tank complaint. The colour change is a symptom, not a disease, and where the yellowing appears (old leaves, new leaves, veins, whole plant) tells you a lot about the cause. Quick answer: Aquarium plants usually turn yellow because of nutrient shortage: yellow old leaves point to nitrogen or potassium, while pale or yellow new leaves point to iron or trace elements. Other causes are too little light, rotting roots or rhizomes, and normal adjustment after planting. Start a complete liquid fertiliser (plus root tabs for rooted plants), give 6–8 hours of suitable light, keep rhizomes above the substrate, and trim leaves that are fully yellow.

Nutrient deficiencies: the most common cause

Most yellow leaves in home aquariums are caused by missing nutrients. Fish waste supplies some nitrogen and phosphorus, but not enough potassium, iron and trace elements for most plants, especially in lightly stocked tanks. Light problems

Plants that need medium to high light, such as red stems and carpet plants, turn pale, yellow and leggy under a basic LED.
