Description

Anubias heterophylla is one of the most rewarding large Anubias you can add to a planted aquarium. A hardy, slow-growing epiphyte, Anubias heterophylla produces long, lance-shaped deep-green leaves on sturdy stalks that bring height and a lush, jungle feel to the mid-ground or background of an aquascape.

Like every Anubias, Anubias heterophylla should never be buried in the substrate — tie or glue its rhizome to driftwood, rock or hardscape and let the roots take hold. It thrives in low to moderate light, needs no CO₂ and tolerates a wide range of water parameters, which makes Anubias heterophylla an excellent choice for beginners, low-tech tanks and busy aquarists. It is tough and rarely eaten, so it also suits community tanks, cichlid tanks and shrimp tanks.

Give Anubias heterophylla gentle flow and the occasional wipe to keep algae off its broad leaves, and it will reward you with years of easy, trouble-free growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Anubias heterophylla easy to grow?

Yes. Anubias heterophylla is a hardy, beginner-friendly epiphyte that grows in low to moderate light with no CO₂, tolerates a wide range of water parameters and is rarely eaten by fish.

Should I plant Anubias heterophylla in the substrate?

No. Never bury the rhizome of Anubias heterophylla — tie or glue it to driftwood or rock and let the roots attach. A buried rhizome will rot.

Does Anubias heterophylla need CO₂?

No. Anubias heterophylla grows without CO₂. It is slow-growing, so extra light and CO₂ only speed it up a little and help keep the broad leaves algae-free.

Is Anubias heterophylla safe for shrimp and community tanks?

Yes. Anubias heterophylla is tough and non-toxic, making it an excellent choice for shrimp tanks, community tanks and even goldfish or cichlid setups.
