The main ones are melt, rhizome rot and algae. Melt means leaves turn see-through and drop in the first weeks after planting; it usually recovers. Rot comes from burying the rhizome in substrate. Yes, especially for low-tech, nano and shrimp tanks. It needs only low to moderate light, no CO₂ and 22–28°C water. It stays compact, usually under 15 cm tall, and grows on wood or rock, so it suits the front and middle of a scape. Its tough leaves are rarely eaten by fish. The trade-offs are slow growth and a higher price than Anubias.

Usually only a few days. A settled Buce can flower underwater, pushing up a small white or pinkish flower from the rhizome. It looks fresh for a couple of days, then fades and starts to rot. In a tank the flower is not pollinated and sets no seed, so trim the spent stalk at its base once it wilts. Regular flowering is a good sign that the plant is healthy and settled.

Wait until the rhizome has grown at least five or six leaves, then cut it into two pieces with clean, sharp scissors, keeping three or more leaves and some roots on each piece.
