Hydrocotyle Tripartita Japan Care Guide: Carpet, Cloud and Trimming

Hydrocotyle Tripartita Japan Care Guide: Carpet, Cloud and Trimming – Anubias.in

Hydrocotyle Tripartita ‘Japan’ is a fast-growing, bright green plant with tiny three-lobed leaves that can carpet the foreground, climb over hardscape or form cloud-like bushes. It is one of the most versatile plants in aquascaping and surprisingly adaptable. Here is how to grow it in Indian tanks.

Quick answer: Hydrocotyle Tripartita ‘Japan’ is an easy to medium carpeting and accent plant that grows well in medium light, faster with CO2, at 20–28 °C. Plant small portions in the substrate or tuck runners between rocks, dose liquid fertiliser weekly, and trim regularly because it spreads quickly and can grow over other plants.

Does Hydrocotyle Tripartita need CO2?

No, but CO2 changes how it grows. Without CO2 and in moderate light it grows taller and looser, which suits a bushy midground or a “cloud” draped over stones. With CO2 and stronger light it stays low with small, dense leaves and forms a proper carpet. Either way it needs regular nutrients, because fast growth uses them up quickly.

How to plant Hydrocotyle Tripartita

  1. Separate the portion into small clumps of 3–5 stems with roots.
  2. Push each clump into the substrate with tweezers, 3–4 cm apart, or wedge runners into gaps between rocks.
  3. Angle stems slightly so runners creep along the surface instead of growing straight up.
  4. Give it 7–8 hours of light a day and dose liquid fertiliser weekly.

Trimming and shaping

Hydrocotyle Tripartita spreads by runners and can quickly climb over slower plants such as Anubias and Bucephalandra. Trim every 2–3 weeks, cutting back stems that rise too high and pulling runners that invade other plants. Trimmed pieces can be replanted to fill gaps. For a cloud effect over rocks, let it grow tall and trim the outline into a rounded shape.

Common problems

  • Leggy stems with big gaps: not enough light; increase intensity or reduce shading from floating plants.
  • Yellowing or holes: nutrient shortage; increase liquid fertiliser.
  • Melting after planting: normal adjustment from emersed growth; new submerged leaves appear in 1–2 weeks.
  • Carpet lifting: dense old growth is starving underneath; trim hard and replant tops.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hydrocotyle Tripartita good for beginners?

Yes, if you can trim regularly. It grows in moderate light without CO2 and forgives most mistakes, but its fast growth needs managing.

Can Hydrocotyle Tripartita grow on rocks or wood?

Its runners can grip and sprawl over hardscape, especially when roots can reach a little substrate in the gaps, which makes it popular for draping over stones.

Is it safe for shrimp?

Yes. Its dense growth is excellent cover for shrimp and fry.
