You don’t need years of experience or high-tech gear to build a beautiful planted tank. With a few easy plants and one good piece of hardscape, you can create a scape you’re proud of. Here are four beginner-friendly layouts.
1. The driftwood tree
Stand a branchy piece of driftwood upright and attach Java moss to the “branches” so it grows out like foliage. Tuck Anubias Nana around the base. Instant bonsai-style tree.
2. The rock garden
Group a few rocks of different sizes off-centre (avoid a symmetrical line). Glue Bucephalandra and Anubias Petite into the crevices for a natural, layered look.
3. The nano jungle
In a small tank, go lush: Java fern at the back, Anubias in the midground, and a moss carpet up front. Low light, no CO₂, big impact.
4. Low-tech iwagumi (simplified)
One dominant stone, two smaller supporting stones, and a simple foreground. Skip the demanding carpet plants and use a low moss lawn instead for an easy, calming layout.
Beginner aquascaping tips
Use the rule of thirds (place your focal point off-centre), leave open space, and choose forgiving plants so the scape grows in instead of melting away. Browse our aquarium plant collection to get started — shipped across India with a live-arrival guarantee.
