Yes, you can put live plants in your fish tank. Anubias is the one to start with: it sits on a rock or a piece of wood, needs no soil, no CO2 and no special light, and it helps keep the water cleaner while it grows.

Why Anubias is the beginner plant
- No soil. Anubias grows from a thick green stem called a rhizome that you tie or glue onto a rock or driftwood. Gravel, sand or a bare tank all work.
- No CO2, no fancy light. A normal aquarium LED for 6–8 hours a day is enough. Strong light only grows algae on its leaves.
- Fish leave it alone. The leaves are thick and leathery, so goldfish, bettas and most community fish do not eat them.
- It helps the water. Living plants take up ammonia and nitrate, the waste your fish produce, so the tank stays cleaner between water changes. It is a helper, not a replacement for your filter and water changes.
- It lives for years and grows slowly, so one plant stays the size you bought for a long time.
Three steps, two minutes
Wrap cotton thread around the rhizome and a rock or piece of wood from your tank, or use a dot of aquarium-safe gel superglue. Do not push the rhizome into the gravel.
Place the rock anywhere in the tank, ideally out of direct strong light. That is the whole setup.
Leave it alone. A couple of old leaves may yellow in the first weeks while it settles; new leaves follow. The thread can be cut away after two to three months once the roots grip.

Frequently asked questions
Will the plant clean my aquarium water?
It helps. Live plants absorb ammonia and nitrate, so water stays cleaner for longer and algae has less to feed on. You still need a filter and regular partial water changes; plants reduce the work, they do not remove it.
Do I need soil or a special substrate?
No. Anubias feeds through its leaves and the roots that grip the rock, so it grows on bare glass, gravel or sand. Just never bury the green rhizome, or it rots.
Is Anubias safe with goldfish, bettas and other fish?
Yes. Its leaves are too tough for most fish to eat, which is why it is the plant we recommend for goldfish and betta tanks. It is not known to be harmful to fish.
How much light does it need?
A normal aquarium LED or even bright room light for six to eight hours a day. More light does not make it grow faster; it only grows algae on the leaves.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every plant ships with our live-arrival guarantee: send a photo within 24 hours of delivery and we refund any plant that arrived dead.
