You don’t need a pressurised CO₂ system or expensive lighting to grow a lush planted tank. Plenty of beautiful aquarium plants thrive in low-tech setups. Here are ten of the best that don’t need CO₂ — all suited to Indian tanks and beginners.
The low-tech all-stars
- Anubias — the ultimate low-light, no-CO₂ plant. Attaches to wood and rock. Shop Anubias.
- Java fern — hardy epiphyte, almost impossible to kill, great cover for fish.
- Java moss — drapes over hardscape, perfect for shrimp tanks and fry.
- Bucephalandra — premium nano plant that’s as easy as Anubias. Shop Bucephalandra.
- Cryptocoryne — hardy rooted midground plant that forms lush rosettes. Shop Cryptocoryne.
- Vallisneria — fast background grass that makes a swaying green curtain.
- Water Wisteria — quick-growing stem plant that soaks up nutrients and starves algae.
- Hornwort — floating or planted, it grows fast and helps control algae.
- Amazon Sword — a large rooted plant for a dramatic centrepiece.
- Marimo moss ball — a fun, near-zero-maintenance “plant” for any tank.
Low-tech tips for success
Choose rhizome plants (Anubias, Java fern, Bucephalandra) first — they’re the most forgiving and need no substrate. Keep lighting moderate (8–9 hours) to avoid algae, dose a liquid fertiliser weekly, and do regular water changes. Don’t chase dense carpets early; those usually want bright light and CO₂.
